New Beginning

Happy New Year and welcome to new beginnings! Can you believe that 2022 has come to an end and 2023 is finally here. I don’t know if I’m happy or sad about that fact. You see, 2022 was full. I had some major surgery this past summer and I am feeling so much better but it was a two to three month recovery. And during all of that we sold our old home and had to move into a rental which we are still at. It took awhile but we have found a nice little piece of property with a project of a home on it. Believe me, I will be sharing a lot about it!

New Garden

The worst of news is also the best of news when it comes to my garden. It will be a new garden and I’m excited about this but the work this will bring is also overwhelming. Setting up a garden for me means to create an accessible garden which we are building with raised beds using metal water troughs for the most part. All of this means creating new soil, learning the best places to plant things and just creating my garden.

New Animals

I can’t have a garden without having my chickens, bunnies and worms. These little buddies of mine are so important to me for building and maintaining my garden. The name of this blog might be Our DIY Garden we will have plenty of animals to take care because they are so important to the garden and building compost. While I won’t get into it to much right now we will talk about how each animal will have dual jobs which I’m excited about.

So, we have talked about the new beginnings of 2023. Right now, I’m not sure if I should be excited about the new home, the new garden and the new animals that 2023 are bringing. But I do know one thing, all of it is coming. So, I’m inviting you to come along with me and see how the changes happen.

Worm Farming for the Garden

It has been a busy and crazy gardening season here. I hope that you have had good luck with your garden as well! This has been the first full garden we have had since I got sick three years ago so it has taken a lot out of me to keep up with the garden and then with the harvesting, canning and dehydrating. But I am so thankful for the garden it is what has kept my spirits happy.

So, even though I have enjoyed the garden and it has done well, it hasn’t done as well as what I wanted with my tomatoes. To be fair to the tomatoes it wasn’t all their fault. Ron created two new beds and I didn’t pay attention enough to the soil we put in them. We actually put to much compost in the beds. So the tomato yield wasn’t what I thought it should of been.

We are actually going to put in another two new beds this fall and I don’t want to make the same mistake so I decided to add a new venture to help our gardens.

WORMS

I decided to shoot a video this week about starting worm vermiculture.

Here it is. My first 1st delivery of red wiggler worms for the garden.

Do You Have An Herb Garden?

Having an herb garden has always been a dream of mine however; gardening has always meant veggies in my mind. I have been doing vegetable gardening for most of my life.

In the Beginning

I grew up on a cattle ranch in Montana and we had a very large garden there. I did not enjoy working in the garden pulling weeds and watering it, I would rather be out riding my horse. After I got married I started gardening again and I enjoyed it more but it became more difficult as the kids came along. And true to kid form none of them enjoyed working in the garden. It was hard to keep a garden up, raise kids and keep the small farm that we lived on running too. It was worth it to keep fresh veggies coming into the house and to can what I could for the wintertime but it wasn’t exactly enjoyable. Now that we are empty nesters I am enjoying gardening once again.

Taking the Herb Class

The class focuses in on six herbs and I’ve been able to find seeds for some of the herbs that we are talking about in the class, Echinacea, garlic, sage, and cayenne. I already have the garlic coming up in my grow room. I have just planted Echinacea, sage and cayenne. I’ll probably order the Elderberry shrubs and mullein online.

My biggest problem is the area I have for my new herb garden has shade, a lot of shade. Most herbs like the sun so my plan is to keep the herbs in pots this year and rotate them so they aren’t in the shade all the time. There are four trees that shade the area and I’d like to cut them down but that isn’t in the budget this year. It is all about adjusting and working the best with the areas that we have for our gardens.

The class talks about the history or the herb, how to grow it, how to store it and then make an herbal remedy from the herb. It has been so interesting. I know this will be a jumping off point for me to move forward and learn more about herbs.

What is Your Herb Garden Dream

I’d really love to share with you the things I learn in my herb class so be looking for those blogs in the near future.
